A Walk

This afternoon (once the snow stopped!?) I went for a walk along the stream we canoed along a few weeks ago, and then across to Fleam Dyke and back via Balsham and Hildersham. Total distance about 15 miles or so. I'm not sure when I set out, but I got back around sunset.

On the way back along Fleam Dyke a mini snowstorm passed by:

A few minutes later the sun re-appeared:

Fleam Dyke is a 5th Century AD defence built across the gap between the Essex forests and the swamps that were the fens. The intention was to control the passage between East Anglia and the rest of the country west. Not very much is known about it, but it's still an impressive thing. Some 20' from the top of the bank to the bottom of the ditch. Not bad for something 1,500 years old.

I saw lots of violets, cowslips and ground ivy in flower, and a lot of dead ivy-covered trees that had fallen in the winds of the last month (or two!)

Looking forward to Wales next weekend.
